I am sorry, but I whole heartedly disagree. I had to read this book for english, I found it painstakingly slow, over discriptive and monotonous. I suppose it comes down to personal taste, but the bush setting did nothing for me.

Hi Whitney. Thanks for commenting.
As regards the language and words like 'nigger' or 'negro', it was the language of that period, and that is how they spoke. It makes us cringe now, and feel insulted but they didn't know any better, and had been brought up with these words and descriptions. If we were to change those words, it would alter the flavour of the book.
I also believe that the language not only makes us angry but opens our eyes to how bad it was for people who were not white and male. Women were very much subservient second class citizens, even if they were white. To take away the impact of the language would make these issues pale into the background as if unimportant. I think we agree that they are very important, and that is why Harper wrote about them. It was all about awareness raising. The fact that we are talking about this book now in 2008 indicates that she did a good job. So, in conclusion, I would not change the use of such words, as they have an important part to play in raising social awareness. Hope this helps.
Good luck with 9th Grades :)

well i heard bout this book from cosmopolitan magazine and thought why not have a peep! as i delved in to the book i felt as if i was their and that i was literally meg in her situation. all through the book you are excited and resist to put it down. the only let down is the ending as it does end on cliff hanger which is quite abrubt and dissappointing. I beleive that it is wise to make a sequel and i recommend it to anyone who likes chick flicks and magazines it is great book and it leaves you wanting more.

I would say that 10 is too young, as there's some violence in this book.

May I suggest visiting my forum (www.bookclubforum.co.uk) for some more suggestions? I'm sure we've discussed books for various age ranges before, so you might find something useful. :)

Hi Michelle,

I found your blog while looking for YA books to read with my 10 year old daughter. Do you think she's too young for Sugarcoated?

We just finished a great old-fashioned mystery, a la Nancy Drew that I'd like to recommend to you. It's called Bitter Tastes by V.B. Rosendahl and we had a great time trying to guess what would happen next. It has an 11 year old heroine, Kathy, who's trying to fit in at her new school but can't because of a secret he's hiding.

OK -- I'll leave you in suspense . . . . LOL

Thanks for your blog -- have it bookmarked for future reference.

Cheers,
Linda

Thanks very much, Michelle, for your positive review of my first novel, EMOTIONAL GEOLOGY. (I didn't know this site but Google Alerts turned it up for me.)

I was pleased to hear you'd like to read more of my work. :-) My 3rd novel, STAR GAZING (published by Piatkus) is out in May and there will be another next year.

Happy reading!

Great review! Oryx and Crake is a fantastic book, I loved the whole idea of it. I thought the character of Snowman was wonderful, so raw at times but at the same time so sensitive and alone.

Highly recommended especially after Kylie's review.

Read 'Oryx and Crake' if you get the chance.
