UK Competition – The String Diaries by Stephen Lloyd Jones

Earlier in the year I was sent an early copy of The String Diaries. As it’s a big book, and the publication date was some time off, I took a peek at the beginning, thinking I could read it over a few weeks. Instead, I found myself absolutely gripped, and it took just a few days. It became one of my favourite books so far this year, and I will be recommending it to lots of people!

Thanks to the lovely people at Headline, I’m running a competition to give away three copies of this brilliant book. You don’t have to worry about whether you follow my blog, retweet on twitter, or promise me your first-born – simply visit Headline’s page, and then return and answer one simple question.

Remember, it’s UK only, and the closing date is Sunday 23rd June.

Good Luck!

Snow Day!

Welcome to Snow Day!

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey is published in paperback today, 30th Aug 2012.

A bewitching tale of heartbreak and hope set in 1920s Alaska.

Jack and Mabel have staked everything on making a fresh start for themselves in a homestead ‘at the world’s edge’ in the raw Alaskan wilderness. But as the days grow shorter, Jack is losing his battle to clear the land, and Mabel can no longer contain her grief for the baby she lost many years before.

The evening the first snow falls, their mood unaccountably changes. In a moment of tenderness, the pair are surprised to find themselves building a snowman – or rather a snow girl – together. The next morning, all trace of her has disappeared, and Jack can’t quite shake the notion that he glimpsed a small figure – a child? – running through the spruce trees in the dawn light. And how to explain the little but very human tracks Mabel finds at the edge of their property?

Written with the clarity and vividness of the Russian fairytale from which it takes its inspiration, The Snow Child is an instant classic – the story of a couple who take a child into their hearts, all the while knowing they can never truly call her their own.

To celebrate, BCF are offering four SIGNED copies, straight from the publishers, and all you have to do is fill in the form below! UK only, and the closing date is midnight Monday 3rd Sept 2012.

Good luck!

Deity by Steven Dunne – Review and Giveaway

Deity is the 3rd book in The Brook Chronicles, but it’s certainly possible to read it as a stand-alone, as I did. I will be going back and picking up the 1st book, because I want to know more, but this works just fine as a stand alone.

In Deity, two separate crimes are investigated – the first starts when two bodies are found, both with internal organs removed, and the second surrounds the disappearance of four students. Al signs point to the fact that these four students have committed suicide, but until their bodies can be found, no one is sure what is really going on – especially as a website entitled ‘Deity’ seems to be involved.

The main detective is Damen Brooks, who we learn is haunted by previous cases, and seems close to a breakdown himself. It’s certainly something I’ve seen before in crime books, but there was something about Damen which made him appear very human, and very real. despite his past and his issues, he cares very much about his work, and his cases, and as I’ve said, I will picking up the earlier books to learn more about him.

It has all the usual aspects of a crime novel, including the twists and turns, and it’s paced well – it’s a cliché, but it’s a page turner! 🙂

Deity is published by Headline, and they have kindly offered FIVE copies for readers of this blog. (UK only) Closing date midnight 21st Aug 2012.

Vampire Apocalypse Give Away from Derek Gunn

A year ago I reviewed the first of Derek Gunn’s Vampire Apocalypse books.. A World Torn Asunder. I then recieved book 2, Descent into Chaos, which I was also happy to review.

In a time where everyone seems obssessed with Twilight, Derek offers something a little different.. this time the vampires really are the baddies, and the stories are about the war between vampire, thrall and human.. with many bloody battles!

Derek is offering a copy of either book to one lucky UK winner – so it doesn’t matter if you’re new to the series, or wish to move on to the 2nd book.. you can simply specify which copy you need. 🙂

Take a visit to the official web site to find out more, then enter the contest by simply commenting here. Tell me if you’ve already read book one, or why it is you’d like to try it. Or tell me whether you prefer your vampires cute and cuddly, or with a ‘bite’!?
(But don’t forget, UK only.)

Closing date: 26th April 2009
